The Motor Build-Up

In the next couple of pages we will show you the steps that we went through in obtaining and assembling the small block 302 that will rest within the Yellow Fury. Although this project was chosen at the last minute, with 2 other projects going at the same time, it was pretty cut and dry and took little time to organize.

We started off by getting the short block and transmmission already assembled, I didn't like this idea, but time and money constraints prohibited actually building the two. So after the short block and tranny arrived, we started figuring what we wanted the block to do. After a couple of brainstorming sessions, we decided to go for a torque monster and accept whatever horsepower we could get!

Since the chassis was already completely stripped, going EFI wasn't an option in my book, so we decided to stick with the carbed setup!

Update:The cam and rocker arms finally arrived after almost a month after ordering, so the block should be buttoned up sometime next week. Right now the focus is on getting the Paxton Novi 1000 tuned on the Grey Ghost. Had no problems with the install, took about an hour for the head unit and brackets, but had to order a smog pump delete kit from Summit, so that definately slowed us down. I hope to have Project Yellow Fury running by June. Will have to wait and see, with FFW Gainesville quickly approaching, I would rather see the Ghost make her appearance!

UPDATE 1/19/2004:

The chassis was sold to a friend just south of Gainesville. He should have it ready for the 2004 race season, for those of you that frequent Gainesville, look for the grey primered notchback, and ask to take a look at the motor, you will definately be surprised at Rob's work!

Here is the motor when we first got it, we went through it somewhat to make sure nothing got banged up in the shipping. Everything looked good, so we decided to tape it off and do some cleaning.

Another shot from the bottom, no major problems here, just needed a little elbow grease and some TLC.
Here is the problem, the carbon buildup on the pistons! Nice job there Chris. Be sure to check out the next couple of pictures of the intake and pay close attention to the pistons.
Here is a shot with the intake sitting on the block. Yes I know, where are the heads? Seems the guy doing the heads forgot about us!! They should be here this week! So he says?
Another shot of the intake on the block. Again, notice the pistons, they still need on final cleaning, but that will come before we slap the heads on!
Here we are seeing if we are going to have clearancing issues with a 1" spacer and the nitrous plate. Its going to be close, but I think we might have to opt for another cowl hood. The 6" from the 393 might be a bit much on this little motor!!
Here is a shot of the motor with the GT40P's finally on. Still waiting on Trickflow cam and rocker arms before any final assembly can be done.
Another shot of the motor with the heads. We are almost there!!
